The Royal Tenenbaums

This painting was part of a group exhibition at Spoke Art in San Francisco called “Bad Dads”, which was Wes Anderson themed. I remember when The Royal Tenenbaums came out in theaters, because I went to see it. I did not like it. I didn’t understand what on earth Wes Anderson was getting at with all these characters standing around awkwardly and delivering this stilted dialogue. It LOOKED nice but it felt odd. Years later, after attending art school, where we learned a lot about film history and watched a ton of films, I saw Tenenbaums again and it knocked my socks right off. Context makes a difference. It’s now one of my favorites.
Caricature is not necessarily my strong suit, but I really feel that I nailed Chas.
