Rise Up With Fists
2017, Acrylic on Board
SOLD
This book was part of a group exhibition at Gallery Nucleus called Draw the Line. It was a silent charity auction, and all proceeds went to the ACLU. This piece was created in the wake of the 2016 election, when emotions were running high. I wanted to create an image that would feel powerful and resonant, and hopeful – strong. I remember listening to the Jenny Lewis song “Rise Up with Fists!!” an awful lot during this time, and that’s where this painting gets its name, and attitude: feeling a multitude of emotions (many of them in conflict with each other) but choosing to move forward anyway – even if you have to punch your way through.
“But I still believe
And I will rise up with fists
And I will take what’s mine
There but for
the grace of god go I”
